ProMASS Media: Sep 14, 2016: After, Shot putter Deepa Malik confirmed India’s third medal at the Paralympic Games, Devendra Jhajharia has won gold in the men’s javelin throw, F46 event at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. He becomes only the second gold medallist at the Paralympics for the country. Devender improved his own 2004 record of 62.15 metres, with a world-record throw of 63.97 metr. He had also secured the gold medal in the javelin event at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. Devendra took India’s tally at this edition of the Paralympics to four medals — two golds, one silver and a bronze.
The 36-year-old athlete, with an amputated left hand, was awarded the Arjuna award in 2004 and the Padma Shri in 2012, becoming the first Paralympian to receive the honour. PM Narendra Modi has congratulated Devendra Jhajharia for winning the Gold medal at the Rio Paralympics. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, it is historic and well-deserved Gold. He said, the nation proud of him.
