Imo Singh on Delimitation process in Manipur

Imphal: In a significant appeal to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Manipur BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh has called for a series of electoral reforms to ensure fairness and integrity in the state’s democratic processes.

Highlighting the need for a transparent delimitation exercise, the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and the elimination of bogus voters, Singh’s demands come at a critical juncture for Manipur, a state grappling with socio-political challenges and illegal infiltration concerns.

Call for a Fair Delimitation Process in Manipur:

Manipur BJP MLA Rajkumar Imo Singh urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to conduct a fair, transparent, and inclusive delimitation process in Manipur.

Imo Singh, who is the son-in-law of former Chief Minister Biren Singh, in a letter to the Union Home Minister, urged a fair, transparent, and inclusive delimitation process in Manipur.

The BJP legislator’s appeal follows a recent directive from the Supreme Court, which has instructed the completion of the pending delimitation exercise in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam within the next three months.

Push for the National Register of Citizens

He also urged the Union Home Minister to initiate the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in the state and the removal of bogus voters from electoral rolls before the delimitation exercise begins.

The Manipur government led by former Chief Minister Biren Singh on a number of occasions along with all organisations of majority Meitei communities have been demanding to initiate the NRC in the state to curb the illegal infiltration from the neighbouring countries especially from Myanmar.

Imo Singh underscored the need to finalise the NRC process in Manipur to ensure that representation within the democratic framework is reserved for genuine Indian citizens.

Addressing Electoral Integrity

While talking to the media, he welcomed the apex court’s decision. Singh emphasised that certain critical issues must be addressed first to maintain the integrity and fairness of the process.

He stressed that this step is crucial for maintaining electoral integrity and preventing unauthorised entries into the voter lists.

The MLA also accepted the Central government’s efforts to detect and identify illegal immigrants but urged for faster execution of these measures.

Eliminating Bogus Voters and Fake Aadhaar Cards

He called for a thorough review of the electoral rolls to eliminate bogus voters, citing previous reports of discrepancies in voter lists. The MLA pointed out that during the tenure of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, 65,000 fake Aadhaar cards were detected.

Singh said that the Election Commission of India (ECI) will ensure that Aadhaar-Voter ID linkage is preceded by the removal of fake Aadhaar cards, ensuring accuracy and reliability in the electoral process.

Conclusion

Given the socio-political sensitivities in Manipur and the disturbances witnessed over the past two years, he outlined several key measures that should be implemented before the delimitation exercise begins.

Through his multifaceted appeal, Imo Singh seeks to strengthen Manipur’s electoral framework, addressing long-standing issues of illegal infiltration, voter fraud, and representational fairness.
