A senior team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted an in-depth survey of the Kailashahar airport site in the Unakoti district on Monday (May 26, 2025), signaling a major step toward its potential reopening. Kailashahar Airport in Tripura is one of the oldest airports in the State. It was built in 1950.

The AAI team’s visit has ignited excitement among residents of North Tripura and nearby Cachar district in Assam, who have long advocated for the airport’s revival.

The inspection team, headed by M. Rajkishore, AAI’s Northeast Regional Director, included prominent officials like Kailash Chander Meena, Director (IAP) of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala, alongside Unakoti district’s Additional District Magistrate L. Darlong and Kailashahar’s Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pradip Sarkar.

The team evaluated the airport’s current infrastructure, visibility conditions, and land requirements to assess the feasibility of resuming flights.

Rajkishore, addressing the media post-inspection, expressed optimism about the project’s future.

“We’ve conducted a thorough initial assessment of the site. Our next steps involve collaborating with the Tripura government to finalize the scope of operations and services,”
