Covid surge in Tripura: Despite warnings, people behaving in reckless manners

Even as the number of Corona cases is mounting alarmingly, a section of people, especially in rural areas, is behaving in reckless manners and violating Covid norms grossly. Be it markets or ceremonial programmes, people are gathering in places in large number at a time and many of them are even without properly wearing a mask. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and local administrations are urging people to follow Covid norms at this crucial juncture.

"Unless people wear masks and avoid crowding in markets and other public places, Covid situation will continue to worsen. The administration is doing its best to aware people - it is now our task to follow the norms", said one Agartala-based elderly person.

Local administrations have made repeated calls to follow Covid guidelines due resurgence of Covid across the country and in Tripura. People seem to be oblivious to Covid threat, informed sources said.

In Agartala, the Night curfew is in progress – however, markets in the city are witnessing regular crowding during the daytime showing scant respect to social distancing norms. As the administration started imposing penalties, the number of ‘no-mask’ reduced significantly – however, social distancing violation is a major concern for city dwellers.

The situation in Gomati district appears to be precarious. As no restrictions were imposed, holding big marriage parties and crowding in Udaipur markets as well as rural markets are very common. The situation is such that anyone may think that there is no Covid threat. In rural areas under Gomati district a good number of people are traveling without masks as well as violating social distancing.

A similar situation was observed in Dharmanagar, a section of people is giving masks and social distancing a toss in public places. E-rickshaws are carrying 5-6 persons ignoring Covid threat. Violation of social distancing is obvious at different government offices - even in the Court premises.

The administration is alerting people repeatedly and urging people to follow Covid guidelines, however, with little success. A smaller section of the society is in panic due to the Covid outbreak. Ironically, many people are behaving in a reckless manner giving rise to the possibility of a surge in Corona.

Halhali weekly market under Kamalpur on Sunday witnessed massive gatherings. People were seen jostling all around the market ignoring social distancing. Both the buyers and sellers were seen roaming around without properly using masks.
