In a shocking turn of events, Swarna Kumar Tripura, a militant associated with the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), has escaped from the central jail in Tripura’s Sepahijala district. The convict, serving a life sentence for multiple crimes, was discovered missing during a routine check on Tuesday morning.
Rakesh Chakraborty, the Superintendent of Kendriya Sansodhanagar, has called for an immediate investigation into the escape. He has requested the Bishalgarh police to file an FIR against two jail staff members, Tapan Rupini, a warder, and Mafiz Mia, a guard commander, citing their ‘suspicious’ involvement in the incident.
According to Chakraborty’s written intimation to the Bishalgarh police, CCTV footage revealed Rupini’s unauthorized presence in the ward where Swarna was lodged. The footage also showed Rupini assisting in opening the lockup at 8 pm on the night of May 13, 2024.
The footage further revealed that Swarna was carrying a bag during his escape at approximately 12:45 am on May 14, 2024. It is suspected that the bag contained tools that facilitated his escape.
Chakraborty stated in his intimation, “They are involved in harbouring the escape of said convicted prisoner from secured jail custody.” He urged the Bishalgarh police station to initiate an effective investigation against the two jail staff members.
Swarna Kumar Tripura, a member of the NLFT, a banned militant outfit based out of Bangladesh, was sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty in multiple cases, including murder and kidnapping. This is not the first time he has escaped custody. He previously escaped from the central jail in 2016 and from the Kanchanpur sub-jail in 2022, only to be re-arrested in 2023.
Meantime, police stations across the state have been alerted, and an intensive search operation is underway to locate the convict. The Border Security Force (BSF) has also been put on high alert to prevent the convict from crossing over to neighbouring Bangladesh.
Sepahijala Superintendent of Police, Bogati Jagadeeswar Reddy, visited the central jail in Bishalgarh to assess the situation following the jailbreak. The central jail, located approximately 30 km from here, houses around 650 inmates. (Edited)
