Mizoram to face off UP in opening match of 73rd All India Police Football Championship in Tripura on Feb 24

Tripura is set to make history as it prepares to host the prestigious 73rd BN Mullik Memorial All India Police Football Championship 2025, the first time the state has been given the honor of organizing this tournament. The championship, organized by the Tripura Police, will commence on February 24, with defending champions Mizoram set to clash against Uttar Pradesh in the opening match. The grand finale is scheduled for March 7.

Grand Scale of the Tournament

During a press conference at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Friday, Director General of Police (DGP) Amitabh Ranjan announced that the championship would witness participation from 45 teams, including 36 men’s teams and nine women’s teams, representing 25 states, four Union Territories, and seven Central Forces teams. The event is expected to feature around 1500 players, including several national and international-level athletes.

With 31 teams already having arrived in Tripura, the remaining teams are expected to reach by tomorrow. Tripura will be fielding teams in both the men's and women's categories, with notable players such as Badal Debbarma and Bulti Chowdhury bringing international experience to the host state’s squad.

The championship will be officially inaugurated at the Umakanta Mini Stadium on the morning of February 24. The event will be attended by the presence of Tripura Chief Minister and Home Department Minister, Dr. (Professor) Manik Saha, who will attend as the chief guest.

The tournament will be conducted in a league-cum-knockout format and will feature a total of 102 matches, including 81 in the men’s category. Matches will be played on astro-turf fields across various locations, including Agartala, Jirania, Mohanpur, Jampuijala, and Udaipur. Several matches will also be held under floodlights to enhance the viewing experience.

Ensuring Transparency and Smooth Execution

DGP Amitabh Ranjan emphasized that preparations for the championship are in full swing to ensure its smooth execution. He highlighted that the grouping of teams was carried out through a hybrid-mode lottery at the national level to maintain complete transparency.

A total of 40 referees, along with other match officials, will oversee the tournament to ensure fair play and adherence to regulations. The tournament has received enthusiastic support from the people of Tripura, including several notable figures who have extended their assistance in making the event a grand success.

Appeal for Cooperation and Enthusiasm

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Tripura Police urged all stakeholders, including local authorities, sports enthusiasts, and citizens, to extend their cooperation to make this championship a memorable and successful event. With the stage set and excitement building, Tripura is ready to showcase its sporting prowess and hospitality on the national stage.
