Gang rape becoming a major socio-political issue in Tripura, protests continue

In the run up to State Assembly Polls in Tripura, incidences of rape have become a major political and social issue. The roles of the Police and Tripura Women Commission are under scanner. While the Opposition parties are scaling up pressure on the ruling BJP, common people as well as individual community are voicing dissent.

enewstime-Gang-rape-tripura-protest-Manipuri-TMCIn addition to gang rapes at Kumarghat and Kalyanpur and rape at Kailashahar in quick succession, a 52-year old man was arrested for his alleged involvement in raping a 12-year old girl in Jogendranagar in Agartala – this has further put the administration and ruling party under pressure.    

 

Almost every day, Opposition parties and social organizations are holding protest programmes demanding arrests of all culprits. Police had already arrested the accused persons involved in Kailshahar and Jogendranagar rape case. Total six persons were arrested in Kumarghat gang rape case while two out of four accused persons were arrested in connection with Kalyanpur rape case.

 

CPIM leader Pabitra Kar slammed the government and alleged, “The ongoing Ghare Ghare Sushasan under the leadership of chief minister Dr. Manik Saha went in vain as the law and order situation of the state turned worse with the increasing rate of crime against women and minor girls.”

 

Women wing of the party also held a demonstration venting anger at the role of the Tripura Women Commission.

 

Gang-rape-tripura-protest-Manipuri-TMCTrinamool Congress led by State in-charge Rajib Banerjee and MP Sushmita Dev held a rally in Agartala demanding immediate arrests of the culprits involved in the gang rape cases.

 

Speaking after a joining programme Tripura Pradesh Congress leaders also flayed the government on the gang rape issue.


At Kailashahar under Unakoti district, people of Bishnupriya Manipuri community held a massive protest march at Dalugaon Bazar under Kailashahar on Friday condemning the raping of a minor girl at Kumarghat on October 19 last.

 

The protest march was held under the banner of ‘Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Yuva Parishad’ and eminent citizens of the community Mridul Sinha, Niranjan Sinha, Padma Gopal Sinha, Nilkanta Sinha, Dwip Sinha and others led the rally. The agitators demanded the arrest and ‘Hang till Death’ punishment for all persons involved in the crime.

Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma visited the Kalyanpur gang rape victim and demanded arrests of the remaining two culprits who on the run.
