The incident unfolded when a minibus of the Kidzee International School in Dharmanagar, like everyday, was ferrying students on Friday.
When the bus was passing through Paschim Dewanpasa gram panchayat, the driver had to stop the bus and step out to allow a student to attend a natural call. As the driver left his seat and stepped out , a student accidentally pressed the accelerator, causing the bus to speed up uncontrollably.
The vehicle started veering dangerously toward a nearby body of water.
The driver, upon noticing the bus's perilous trajectory, sprinted after it in a desperate attempt to regain control and stop it.
Despite his efforts, the bus continued its fateful course. Even as the driver managed to catch up to the bus but was unable to halt its momentum and after covering some distance, the minibus plunged into the water at the side of the road.
Local residents, witnessing the incident, rushed to the scene. They worked together to rescue the children and the driver. The fire department was promptly notified, and firefighters, aided by the community, extricated the driver and made arrangements to immediately transport him to Dharmanagar North District Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
According to local people, 6-7 children on board suffered only minor injuries and were not seriously harmed. However, the incident has left the entire area in shock and panic.
