Miscreants assault doctor in Tripura death of a patient

In yet another incident, miscreants assaulted one doctor at Natun Bazar hospital in Tripura over the death of a patient last night. Local sources, Dr Partha Talapatra and one GDA worker Lalmohan Banik came under attack last night by relatives of one Pradip Das (48) – Das succumbed to his illness in the hospital after he was referred to Gomati District Hospital.

“Relatives of Das brought Pradip Das at Natunbazar Hospital last night from Jatanbari area. Dr Talapatra attended Pradip and referred him to Gomati District Hospital for better treatment as physical condition was critical. However, Das collapsed after he boarded the ambulance”, sources said and added, irked at the death, relatives of Das attacked Dr Talapatra and thrashed him.

Shocked at the incident, All Tripura Govt Doctors’ Association (ATGDA) condemned the attack on the on duty doctor by miscreants.

Led by Dr Biswajit Pal, members of the Association of Gomati District rushed to the Natunbazar Hospital. Delegates met Medical Officer in-charge Dr Milan Bhakta Jamatia and got the details of the incident. Later, Doctors’ delegation went to the local Police Station and demanded immediate action against the culprits.  

Speaking to the media, Dr Biswajit Pal said, “We have full faith on Natun Bazar Police and believe that they will be able to arrest the culprits”.

Dr Pal also said, “attacks on medics would hit rural health care services. If anyone has any grievances against health personnel, they can follow the democratic norms and file complaints. Such attacks would do nothing good for people but demoralize the doctors and health workers who put their lives at risk to serve the common people”.     

Condemning the attack, ATGDA central Committee members Health Director and demanded prompt action from the department to ensure safety of doctors.
