NLFT extortion case : Three held in Tripura for 'helping extremists clandestinely’

Tripura police held three persons for assisting banned extremist group- NLFT in an extortion case on Wednesday at Raishyabari under Dhalai.

 

The three persons were arrested after police came to know that they were helping the extremist group in providing money ‘clandestinely’, instead of cooperating police.

 

According to an official release from police, a team of local police based on intelligence inputs had raided a vehicle near Hospital Chowmuhani of Raishyabari this morning. During the search, Amit Bhowmik of Agartala, Suman Majumder of Khowai and Arjun Debnath of Udaipur were detained after police found Rs. 15 lakh in their possession.

 

The three persons informed the police during preliminary investigation that they were contractors of NPCC, associated in fencing work near Indo-Bangla international border. But, later they confessed that they were waiting for the NLFT members to hand over the money.

 

Based on the statements of the three persons, another raid was conducted and one person- Sonamohan Tripura of Nitya Kumar Para under Raishyabari police station was also detained in connection with the case. Police had already initiated further raids under the supervision of SDPO, Gandacherra under the same district.

 

Meanwhile, in a press statement, Tripura Police said, “In the recent period, the banned extremist organization was circulating extortion notices in the jurisdiction of Raishyabari PS, especially amongst the construction agencies engaged in border fencing work.”

 

“In course of further investigation of the case, it transpired that a group of NLFT extremists with sophisticated arms led by Bikram Bahadur Jamatia @ Bomthom was camping opposite to Raishyabari border inside Bangladesh at Sabhumani Para, Panchari PS, Khagrachari district and was engaged in extortion from the border construction agencies,” the press communiqué said.
