As Tripura continues to grapple with heatwave, reports of drinking water scarcity are pouring in from different parts of the State. The scarcity has been deepened with frequent power outage owing to nor'wester. The remote hamlets are the worst affected areas.
In view of the present water scarcity, the State Government pressed water tankers into service to supply drinking water.
Accordingly 313 villages in the state are receiving drinking water supply through tankers. A total of 135 tankers have been deployed to supply drinking water to the affected settlements, State Drinking Water and Sanitation Department revealed during a recent review meeting.
Chairing the review meeting, Secretary of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Abhishek Singh said initiatives must be taken to ensure the proper maintenance and operation of drinking water supply projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Besides, special emphasis must be placed on the speedy implementation of ongoing projects.
Singh further said, executive engineers of the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation have been instructed to take a proactive role in ensuring the disinfection and supply of safe drinking water by conducting regular bacteriological tests of all sources.
They have also been asked to immediately inform the concerned Drinking Water and Sanitation office in the event of any waterborne disease outbreak.
Moreover, the department has also requested the public to boil drinking water for at least 30 minutes before consumption, unless alternative arrangements are made by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
As drinking water supply is directly related to power supply, the TSECL and TREDA officials were instructed to expedite the electrification of water supply projects constructed by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation.
Meantime, executive Engineer of the Khowai District Drinking Water and Sanitation Department Sanjay Debnath informed the media that the Department was supplying drinking water to various villages in the six subdivisions of the district through tankers.
arrangements have been made to supply drinking water through tenders even before the onset of the dry season.
Sixteen tankers are currently supplying drinking water to remote villages in the six subdivisions of Mungiakami, Tulasikhar, Padmabil, Kalyanpur, Teliamura, and Khowai under the Khowai division of the department.
Of these 16 tankers, six tankers are supplying drinking water in Mungiakami, five in Tulasikhar, two in Teliamura, two in Kalyanpur, and one in Padmabil, as per the daily requirement of the villagers.
He added, the department will continue tanker service till the end of the dry season.
