Suspension of a doctor: Tripura Doctors' bodies demand withdrawal

All Tripura Government Doctors’ Association, AGMC Teachers’ Forum and IMA Tripura state Chapter on Wednesday termed the suspension order of Dr. Uttam Bhattacharjee “unfair” and “ill-judged”, particularly when the doctors of the state were facing serious challenges in battling the Covid 19 situations due to paucity of manpower. He was discharging his duties at Bhagat Singh Covid 19 care centre.

Both the doctors’ bodies had convened a joint press conference at GBP hospital Agartala and demanded immediate withdrawal of the suspension orders.

“Dr Uttam Bhattacharjee, who is a renowned eye surgeon of the state has been suspended while he was in his Covid 19 duty. In the suspension orders, no specific allegation was raised against him. Moreover, no mention of the lapses in duty, if any, was mentioned in the orders. Such inhuman behavior with the doctors at a time when the entire state is facing a pandemic situation is unwelcome”, said former GBP Medical Superintendent Dr Ratan Das.

ATGDA secretary Dr Rajesh Chowdhury echoing the same also said, “We are disheartened and shocked at the decision. The government must reinstate him in his position as soon as possible”.

Chowdhury also demanded that humiliating doctors while in duty must be stopped as many of the administrative officers had been spotted doing so in full public view.

“We had witnessed as to how District Magistrate Gomati District TK Debnath had humiliated an on-duty doctor Nistha Das, who accompanied him in a raid conducted to bust an illegal feticide racket. In front of the media, the district magistrate misbehaved with the doctor which was quite incorrect and distressing in this kind of situation”, said Chowdhury.
