Three more hot-spot areas in Agartala, Analysis shows social functions results in Covid surge

As the number of Covid19 cases spiked up recently in Tripura – particularly in Agartala, the West Tripura district administration conducted an analysis to find the reasons behind. The analysis revealed that the sudden spurt in positive cases that was reported in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas took place due to massive social functions in the city areas that include marriages and different kind of Pujas, District Magistrate West Tripura Sailesh Kumar Yadav said on Friday.

“We have conducted an analysis to understand the reason behind this surge. The results are surprising. The lockdown has been lifted on August 5 last. And the growth of positive cases began to show an explosive trend from August 26. We have encountered the spurt and tried to analyse the reasons that contributed to this explosion. As per our analysis, at the stretch, from 9th of August to 26th of August, a huge number of social functions take place. As per the available reports, about 3,000 social marriage ceremonies have been solemnized in this period.

Moreover, some important festivals like Manasa Puja and Ganesh Puja are also there”, Sailesh said adding that another reason that had, perhaps, one of the prime trigger factors was that people became very relaxed towards the restrictions. He also said, “Huge number of political rallies and functions have taken place which is not welcome in such a scenario”.

Speaking on the city-based hotspot areas , he said, after having the analysis, targeted testings have been done. A satellite mapping of the cases is processed to help the administration deal with the situation. “We have identified 10 wards with most of the cases. These wards are also having all the big crowded markets of the city. We are doing more and more targeted testing through makeshift testing centers at all these selected wards. Now as per the latest details, everyday 500 to 700 tests are conducted in these places and 20 to 30 percent of these tests show positive results”, he told reporters at GBP hospital.

He also informed the media that three more hotspot wards were detected--ward 17 (Ker Chowmuhani), ward 33(Jaynagar) and ward 24 (Kalyani, Ashram Chowmuhani). “Maximum number of cases are being reported from Jaynagar right now. So, makeshift testing facilities have been installed there also”, he said.

While charting the steps which have been taken to prevent the death cases, he said, “We have now devised two prong initiatives to reduce the death rate. As per our analysis, those who are dying have been taken to the hospital late. As per our new initiatives, we are keeping a track on the home isolated cases through direct phone calls. In some cases, doctors are personally talking to the patients who have some sort of comorbid situations. In the second case we are trying to strengthen our hospital services and deliver treatment bang on time”.
