Tripura BJP leader threatened by gun carrying miscreants

Tripura BJP state committee member and Tripura OBC corporation chairman Tapas Majumder was threatened at gun point on Saturday at Gandacherra Dak Bungalow under Dhalai district.

In a delayed report, sources said, Majumder, who had been in-charge with campaigning of BJP in Raima Valley Autonomous District Council (ADC) constituency area, received the threats for spearheading a campaign against the Independent candidates who were seeking votes in the name of BJP. Notably,  the Independent candidates were expelled from the BJP for refusing to accept party’s nominated candidate and they jumped into fray as Independent candidates.

A police complaint was lodged against the miscreants with Gandacherra police station but no arrests had been made so far.

Speaking on the issue, Majumder said, “I have been threatened as I was campaigning for the candidates who are fighting under the lotus symbol – the BJP candidate”. Majumder alleged miscreants on behalf of the Independent candidates threatened him.

“More than 20 miscreants stormed inside the Dak Bungalow where I was staying at that point of time. Few of them were carrying guns. They threatened me and asked me to stop counter campaigns against the expelled leaders who were fighting the elections as Independent candidates but trying to woo voters in the name of BJP”, Majumder added.

According to him, a case was lodged immediately with the local police station but no one could be arrested yet in connection with the incident.

“There were 15 to 20 people in the armed group. I had identified three of them but all of them were absconding”, said Majumder.

“A probe is underway to trace them out. Most likely they have gone underground to escape the police dragnet. Search operations and raids are being conducted”, said police sources.

According to local sources, two heavy-weight ex-BJP local leaders Bikash Chakma and Bhumikananda Reang were fighting the elections as Independent candidates in order to keep their strongholds safe and they were hell-bent not to give other contemporary leaders a chance to rise.
