Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday tested positive for Covid-19 and went into self-isolation at his home. Tagging the Covid report, the Chief Minister tweeted: “I’ve been tested Covid-19 positive today. I am absolutely fit & fine with no symptoms. I humbly request all those who’ve come in contact with me to take necessary precautions.”

Dr Saha, who is himself a dental surgeon, recently attended several parties and official programmes in different parts of the state. However, he always used a face mask in public places and gatherings.

In view of the rising fresh cases of Covid-19, the Tripura government has taken several steps including making wearing face masks mandatory in public places from July 12.

According to the Covid bulletin, fresh 365 cases were detected out of total 3361 during the past 24 hours. Positivity which was above 14 per cent on Tuesday, came down to 10.86 per cent on Wednesday. Total 171 patients recovered during the past 24 hours and total number of active cases is 1906.

Among the eight districts, West district continues to be the highest contributor with 186 positive cases during the past 24 hours. In South district, 46 persons were detected Covid positive followed by Gomati District with 39 positive cases. Total 27 positive cases were reported from the North district, 23 from Dhalai, 17 from Khowai and 14 from Sepahijala districts.

Even as Covid infection is spreading fast and face mask wearing was made mandatory – most people eschew face masks in public places. Non-compliance with Covid norms in political gatherings is rampant. People in Markets and public transport are also eschewing masks and violating the social distance norms.
