Tripura : Concerns Grow Over Waterbody Encroachment Amidst Unity Mall Construction in Agartala

The foundation stone for Tripura's first 'Unity Mall' was recently laid near Amtali Police Station, along the bypass road in Agartala, with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurating the project.

The Unity Mall is being cited as a significant step toward improving infrastructure and boosting economic development in the state. Construction officially began on Sunday, sparking excitement among locals eager for the new development.

Local residents have voiced their dissatisfaction and concern, claiming that part of the pond is being filled with soil to facilitate the mall's construction.

This waterbody, they point out, is integral to the community’s religious and safety needs.

For years, the pond has served as a venue for idol immersion during religious festivals and Chot Puja.

Moreover, it acts as an essential resource for firefighting operations, particularly in emergencies. In case of fire incidents, fire tenders use the water of the pond.

The potential encroachment of this waterbody has alarmed residents, who believe its destruction could disrupt both the safety and cultural fabric of the area.

"We welcome the development of the Unity Mall and appreciate the government’s efforts to bring more infrastructure to Tripura. But this pond is crucial for our community," said a local youth.

"It is not just a water source; it’s part of our traditions and safety. We hope the authorities will ensure it remains untouched. Damaging the waterbody will affect the ecology of the area", the locals said.

Residents are calling on the government to revise the project plan to preserve the waterbody.

While the economic development promised by the Unity Mall is acknowledged, many feel that it should not come at the cost of an important community asset like a waterbody.

As construction continues, locals are hopeful that the concerned authorities will take their concerns into consideration and find a solution that balances both progress and preservation, ensuring the waterbody is protected for future generations.
