Tripura Govt Prioritizes Doubling Farmers' Income, Takes Steps to Compensate for Crop Losses

The incumbent BJP-led government in Tripura has accorded top priority to doubling the income of farmers, recognizing the immense potential for the state's self-sufficiency through agriculture. The state government has been consistently standing by the farmers, implementing various initiatives for their welfare. Recognizing the plight of farmers affected by natural calamities, the government has also taken prompt measures to compensate for their losses, said Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath.

Compensation for Crop Losses Due to Natural Disasters

Addressing a press conference in Agartala on Wednesday the Minister informed the media that the government had initiated the process of providing compensation to 81,301 farmers in the state who had suffered crop losses due to natural disasters. This assistance is being provided under the SDRF (State Disaster Response Fund) project and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme) for farmers affected by natural calamities.

Tripura-agriculture-Crop-loss-Ratan-Lal“During the cyclone 'Midhila' that hit the state from November 16 to 18, 2023, crops were damaged in 23,171 hectares of land, impacting 58,210 farmers. For these affected farmers, Rs. 14 crore 58 lakh 14 thousand has been sanctioned to the Agriculture Department under the SDRF project", Nath said.

He added. each affected farmer will receive Rs. 8,500 per hectare. Additionally, under the Horticulture Department, Rs. 7 crore 38 lakh 24 thousand has been sanctioned under the SDRF project for 20,078 affected farmers. Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, 874 farmers will be provided Rs. 44 lakh 60 thousand.

Besides, the Agriculture Minister further said that farmers across the state had faced losses due to unseasonal rains from December 6 to 8, 2023. Under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, 2,139 such affected farmers will be provided assistance of Rs. 69 lakh 30 thousand. He added that the department has already sought compensation under the SDRF project to assist farmers affected by the excessive rainfall in the state on May 28, 2024.

Regarding the recruitment of vacant posts in the Agriculture Department, the Minister informed that 59 Agriculture Officers (Grade-1) have been selected through TPSC, adhering to the 33 percent reservation policy. Among the selected candidates, 21 are women. The offer letters will be distributed to them soon, he asserted.

On another note, the Minister said the recent buyer-seller meet held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, showcased the high demand for agricultural produce from Tripura. He expressed the intention to organize similar events in the state. In line with this, 30 tonnes of Kew variety pineapple from the state were dispatched to Bangalore today.
