The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of three reported incidents, including an alleged case of ragging at the Tripura Medical College, Hapania. The Commission has directed the relevant authorities to submit detailed reports on each incident.
Based on a report in a local newspaper, the THRC on October 28 ordered the Principal of Tripura Medical College to submit a comprehensive report on the alleged ragging incident within three weeks. Additionally, the Commission has mandated an independent inquiry by the District Magistrate of West Tripura and a separate investigation by the Superintendent of Police, with both officials required to submit findings within the same timeframe.
The THRC underscored the importance of enforcing the state’s anti-ragging laws promptly, warning that any delay or leniency could foster a culture of anti-social behavior within educational institutions. Chairperson Justice S.C. Das emphasized that ragging constitutes a serious violation of human rights, infringing upon the fundamental rights of students. The THRC order referenced previous interventions in similar cases, such as a 2022 incident at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Udaipur, which resulted in targeted recommendations to combat ragging.

On October 30, the THRC issued two additional orders after taking suo motu cognizance of reports on separate human rights violations. In one case, the THRC responded to disturbing reports of a woman being paraded naked, labeling the act a grave breach of fundamental human rights. Expressing shock, the Commission noted that such an incident was particularly concerning given Tripura’s strong adherence to the rule of law. The THRC directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report within three weeks.

In another October 30 order, the THRC took notice of a report alleging unlawful interference in the private lives of two adults by local leaders acting outside legal bounds. Despite police awareness of the situation, the THRC noted, "the police action as reported is reverse," indicating a lack of appropriate response. The Commission deemed it necessary to seek a report from the DGP of Tripura on the incident, with a submission deadline of two weeks.
