After a prolonged heatwave that gripped Tripura and other parts of the North-east region, much-needed relief arrived in the form of rain. However, the respite was short-lived as a cascade of rain-induced problems disrupted normal life across the state.
The widespread disruptions in power supply hit different parts of Tripura hard due to storm. With electricity outages, the drinking water supply system also suffered, exacerbating the situation for residents.
As the situation appeared to stabilize, rail and road transport faced a new challenge. Heavy rains triggered landslides in Assam, leading to disruptions in vehicular movements, especially freight transport. The state's infrastructure struggled to cope with the aftermath of the rains and storms. And relief from heatwave evaporated.
Tripura soon found itself in the grip of a fuel crisis. Long queues formed outside petrol pumps, with frustrated consumers waiting for hours. "After standing in line for so long, only to find out there's no more petrol, it's hard to keep calm," lamented a biker near a city petrol station.
Petrol Black Marketing and Midnight Brawl:
Reports of petrol black marketing at exorbitant prices added to people's frustration. In Agartala and its subdivisions, long queues became a common sight. The situation took a ugly turn when a midnight brawl erupted at a petrol pump, prompting police intervention.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha urgently appealed to the Union Railway Minister for the speedy restoration of damaged rail tracks and normalization of train services. Meanwhile, unscrupulous traders took advantage of the crisis, raising prices of essential goods, including onions and potatoes.
The Sadar administration convened a meeting with traders' bodies, urging them to prevent illegal hoarding and artificial price hikes. Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, Sushanta Chowdhury, warned traders against profiteering and assured close monitoring of markets.
While Tripura grapples with these challenges, authorities are working tirelessly to restore normalcy. However, the crisis persists, and the state remains on edge as citizens await relief from the mounting difficulties.
