Reports of sporadic violence and tensions in certain select pockets of West Tripura, Khowai, Gomati and South Tripura districts have poured in after results of ADC polls were declared. In view of the present situation, the district magistrates of the concerned districts had promulgated section 144 CrPc. In a stern message, TIPRA Motha Chairman Pradyot Kishore Debbarman cautioned the supporters and told them to refrain from such post poll violence or face action.
Sources said, a section of over-enthusiastic supporters, allegedly belonging to TIPRA Motha which secured majority in the elections, triggered tension in some pockets of West, Khowai, Gomati and South districts. Sources said, the incidents of threatening, verbal altercations between two or more groups and sometimes physical scuffle – al bait not in major form – were reported.
Meanwhile a delegation of BJP met the DG and urged him to take action and stop the post poll violence.
TIPRA Motha chairman Pradyot Kishore Debbarman vehemently condemned such acts. Speaking to media late Saturday night in Agartala, he said, “attacking the party office or someone’s house or assaulting people are completely unacceptable. I will not tolerate such incidents”. He also said that actions would be taken against persons who were involved in attacks on other party workers.
“I will not defend you, if you are found involved in unlawful activities. I will take action and also urge Police to take actions”, he cautioned.
In this connection he recalled ‘violence’ after BJP-IPFT wrested power from Left Front and said, “I observed that when BJP-IPFT won in 2018 Assembly Polls, there were many ‘attacks’. Also, when I was the president of Tripura unit of Congress, I noticed similar ‘attacks’ after Lok Sabha Polls. And today, we have won – so we cannot do those acts that affected us. I want to end the culture of post poll violence and it will start from today”.
He continued and said, “TIPRA Motha is a very different party compared to other parties. It is supposed to be a patriotic movement – and it is not supposed to be party which beats other Tiprasas including any other community, be it Bengali, Manipuri or Hindustani.”
