Weeklong Sculpture Exhibition of Lalit Kala Akademi started at Nazrul Kala Khestra in Agartala on Wednesday (March 22). The exhibition started with the announcement of fund sanction for purchasing equipments for the benefits of the graphics designers in Tripura.

The Exhibition was inaugurated by Judge of High Court of Tripura Justice Arindam Lodh in presence of Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Viveknagar, Agartala, Swami Shubhakarananda, Lalit Kala Akademy member Suman Majumder and other dignitaries. Wood sculptures of 51 artists including eight from the Northeast Region were displayed in the exhibition.

The exhibition will continue till March 28 and was organized with the initiative of Lalit Kala Akademi.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice Lodh hailed the initiative of the Akademy and said, “I will like to draw the attention of Lalit Kala Akademy authority to make arrangements for selling the sculptures created by the artists”.  Presently, all the sculptures created by the artists are properties of the Akademy and selling is not allowed.

The Exhibition was preceded by a National Wood Carving Camp in the same venue. The Wood Carving Camp was inaugurated by Youth Affairs Minister of State Tinku Roy in presence of Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademy V Nagdesh on March 15 last.

In camp, all the 51 artists started working on woods and craved out wonderful pieces of creation for the Exhibition.

In his speech, Swami Shubhakarananda hailed crafting skills and ascetic expression of the artists who worked hard in the camp and came out with eye-catching and thought provoking wood sculptures.

Suman Majumder, in his welcome speech, informed the gathering that the Lalit Akademy authority has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for purchasing equipments for ‘graphics designers’. Earlier, such equipments were not available in the State and graphics designers in the State were facing troubles.

“With the fund available for purchasing the required equipment, it will be a boon for the Graphic designers of the State”, Majumder said and received noticeable applause from the audience.
