West Bengal CPIM State Secretary Md Salim delivered a cautious yet politically significant response to Mamata Banerjee’s call for anti-BJP unity after Suvendu took oath today.  Instead of direct remarks, Salim used a Rabindranath Tagore quote.

Quick Glance

  • Md Salim avoided direct comments on Mamata Banerjee’s anti-BJP appeal.
  • The CPI(M) leader quoted Rabindranath Tagore during his response.
  • Mamata Banerjee invited Left parties to join a united anti-BJP platform.
  • Suvendu Adhikari’s swearing-in has triggered fresh political realignment debates.

Salim Responds With Tagore Quote

Senior CPI(M) leader Md Salim chose a literary response instead of a direct political statement after Mamata Banerjee urged all anti-BJP forces to unite in West Bengal.

Speaking shortly after Banerjee’s appeal, Salim quoted a famous line from Rabindranath Tagore: “Jibono Jokhon Shukaye Jai, Karuna Dharai Esho.”

The Bengali line translates into English as, “Come as the stream of mercy when life dries up.”

Although Salim did not elaborate further, the remark immediately sparked political discussion in the state.

Political observers interpreted the statement as a subtle and cautious reaction to Mamata Banerjee’s outreach towards the Left parties.

The response gained significance because the CPI(M)-led Left Front and the Trinamool Congress remained bitter political rivals for years in West Bengal.

Mamata Calls for Anti-BJP Unity

Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made the appeal after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal’s new Chief Minister at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata.

At the same time, Banerjee attended a cultural programme at her Kalighat residence to celebrate the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore according to the Bengali calendar.

After the event, she accused the BJP government of creating an atmosphere of fear and unrest in the state following the Assembly election results.

She appealed to opposition political parties, student organisations, youth groups and civil society bodies to join hands against the BJP government.

The Trinamool Congress chief also indicated that ideological differences should not prevent opposition unity. She specifically welcomed Left parties, including the CPI(M)-led Left Front, to become part of a broader anti-BJP platform.

Banerjee further announced that she would remain available at her office daily between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. for discussions with leaders interested in joining the movement.

Political Significance of Salim’s Statement

Md Salim’s measured response reflects the complex political situation currently unfolding in West Bengal.

Political analysts believe the CPI(M) leadership remains cautious about any immediate understanding with the Trinamool Congress despite the BJP’s rise to power.

For decades, the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress fought intense political battles across Bengal. Therefore, any possibility of cooperation remains politically sensitive.

Salim’s use of a Tagore quote instead of direct political remarks allowed the CPI(M) leader to avoid immediate commitment while still acknowledging the changing political atmosphere.

Observers also noted the symbolic importance of invoking Rabindranath Tagore on the same day both Mamata Banerjee and opposition leaders referred to the poet during separate political moments.

BJP Victory Changes Bengal’s Political Equation

The BJP’s victory in the recent Assembly elections has reshaped Bengal politics significantly.

Suvendu Adhikari became the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal after leading the party to a massive electoral success. His rise carries strong political symbolism because he was once one of Mamata Banerjee’s closest associates in the Trinamool Congress.

Mamata Banerjee herself suffered defeat in the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, where Adhikari won by more than 15,000 votes.

The election outcome has forced opposition parties to reconsider their political strategies. As a result, discussions around a possible anti-BJP coalition have intensified in Bengal.

However, ideological mistrust and years of political rivalry could remain major barriers to any united opposition platform.

Bengal Politics Enters New Phase

The latest developments indicate that West Bengal politics may enter a fresh phase of political realignment in the coming months.

Mamata Banerjee’s outreach to Left parties signals a strategic shift after the Trinamool Congress lost power. Meanwhile, the CPI(M)’s cautious reaction suggests that opposition unity discussions may continue without immediate conclusions.

Political observers believe future developments will depend on how opposition parties balance electoral necessity with long-standing political differences. (With IANS Inputs)
