ProMASS: Oct 4, 2016: The 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics is announced. The prestigious Prize is shared by three British physicists working in US universities. This was announced by the Royal Academy of Sciences in Stockholm on Tuesday. The winners of the prize are David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz. Their discoveries have paved the way for designing new materials with all sorts of novel properties.
They all work in the field of condensed matter physics. The three of them discovered totally unexpected behaviours of solid materials. They came up with a mathematical framework (in the field of topology) to explain these weird properties.
