Agartala, March 25: As the restive border state of Manipur continues to grapple with ethnic volatility, the echoes of recent skirmishes in Ukhrul and Kamjong are being felt across the Northeast corridor.
With the Imphal–Jiribam National Highway (NH-37) serving as a critical lifeline for the region and impending Dharmanagar by-poll and elections in TTAADC are upcoming, security arrangements need to be tightened to ensure the peaceful elections in Tripura.
Bunkers Raided in Coordinated Operations
Manipur security forces launched a series of “area domination” exercises on Wednesday, successfully dismantling several unauthorized bunkers in the Ukhrul district.
The operations, centered around the Litan police station jurisdiction, targeted illegal fortifications in Lengiangching and Mongkat Chepu—villages situated on the fragile fault line between Naga and Kuki-inhabited territories.
A senior police official confirmed that the raids yielded a significant volume of spent cartridges, indicating intense recent exchanges of fire.
“The removal of these tactical positions on both sides has immediately cooled down the frequency of direct confrontations,” the official stated, noting that strategic troop deployment is now in place to maintain a buffer.
Escalation of Kuki–Naga Friction
The current flare-up stems from rising tensions near Litan Sareikhong, involving Kuki villagers and Tangkhul Naga residents.
The situation remains precarious following a violent February where over 30 houses were razed.
The human cost of the latest “sporadic firing” includes:
Kamjong District: Two Tangkhul Naga villagers were injured during gunfire at Sharkaphung on Tuesday.
Ukhrul District: A Kuki woman sustained injuries in a similar incident at Mongkot Chepu on Monday.
Major Arms Recovery in Kangpokpi
Parallel to the bunker demolitions, a massive search operation in the Tingkhai Khullen and Nepali Khutti areas of Kangpokpi district led to the seizure of a sophisticated arsenal. The recovery includes:
- One 9 mm carbine and six locally manufactured 9 mm pistols.
- Three improvised bolt-action rifles and two makeshift mortars.
- 55 rounds of varying calibres and approximately two kilograms of pellets.
In a separate breakthrough, police apprehended Md Shanjit Khan, a suspect linked to a high-profile case in Senapati district dating back to December 2025.
News Analysis: A Shift in the Ethnic Chessboard
While much of the attention on Manipur has focused on the Meitei-Kuki divide, the recent friction in Ukhrul underscores a secondary, equally complex layer of the conflict: Kuki-Naga territorial disputes.

Historically, these groups have shared a tense relationship over land claims in the hill districts. The resurgence of these specific clashes suggests that the dormant ethnic rivalries are resurfacing in the State, complicating the path to a singular peace settlement.
Digital Vigilance and Logistics
The Manipur Police have issued a stern warning against the spread of “fake news” and doctored audio-visual content on social media, urging citizens to verify reports with the Central Control Room.
Meanwhile, 113 checkpoints have been established across valley and hill districts to monitor movement, particularly for convoys transporting food and medicine along NH-37.
