The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing of four connected petitions in the Zubeen Garg death case until November 30. The decision brings the bail applications of two key accused and the Assam government’s challenges to the bail granted to two other accused together for consideration.

Assam Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia confirmed the revised hearing date on Friday. He said the apex court would take up the bail pleas of Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma on November 30.

The court will also hear the Assam government’s petitions challenging the Gauhati High Court’s decisions to grant bail to Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipon Garg.

The connected matters could not proceed during Friday’s scheduled hearing. According to Saikia, the Supreme Court did not take up the related petitions involving the other accused. Consequently, the hearing of the connected matters will now take place together on the revised date.

The November 30 proceedings are expected to address the major bail-related issues currently before the Supreme Court in the high-profile case.

Assam Government Pursuing Case Through Legal Channels

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Saikia reiterated the Assam government’s commitment to securing justice for Zubeen Garg.

He said the government was pursuing the matter with determination and had presented its position before the Supreme Court. The state was also making every possible legal effort to ensure justice for the late singer.

“The state government is exhausting all possible legal avenues to ensure justice for Zubeen Garg,” Saikia said.

The Advocate General stressed that the government had apprised the apex court of the progress of the trial. He said the proceedings were continuing on a day-to-day basis.

His remarks underscored the government’s position that the case remained a priority and that it would continue to pursue the matter through the judicial system.

Saikia also urged people in Assam to maintain their confidence in the judiciary. He assured the public that the government would not abandon its efforts to secure justice.

Key Accused Have Remained in Custody for Over a Year

Highlighting the prolonged detention of the two principal accused, Saikia said Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma had remained in custody for more than a year.

He contrasted their detention with the usual bail timeline in cases of this nature.

“In cases of this nature, accused persons generally secure bail within three months. However, those arrested in this case have remained behind bars for more than a year,” the Advocate General said.

According to Saikia, the extended period of custody reflected the seriousness with which the Assam government was pursuing the case before the courts.

His remarks came as the Supreme Court prepared to examine the bail applications of Mahanta and Sharma alongside the state’s challenges to the bail granted to Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipon Garg.

The November 30 hearing will therefore be significant for all four accused, although the petitions involve different bail-related questions.

November 30 Hearing Crucial for Bail Proceedings

The Supreme Court’s decision to hear all four connected matters together is expected to bring the key bail disputes in the Zubeen Garg death case before the apex court.

The proceedings will cover both the applications seeking bail and the Assam government’s efforts to challenge the relief already granted to two co-accused by the Gauhati High Court.

Meanwhile, Saikia reiterated that the state government would continue its legal efforts and urged people not to lose faith in the judicial process.

With the next hearing scheduled for November 30, attention will now turn to the Supreme Court’s consideration of the four connected petitions. (Edited by Enewstime Desk)
