Agartala, December 01, 2019: Regional party of Tripura, Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT) has announced a 12-hour agitation in the State against Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) on December 5 next.
During the 12-hour agitation, INPT activists will block the National Highway and railways. Addressing media in Agartala today, INPT general secretary Jagadish Debbarma and president Bijay Kumar Hrangkhwal announced this.
“We strongly oppose the implementation of CAB in the State as it would affect demography of the State. We also believe that religion and caste can be a criteria for citizenship”, INPT leaders said.
Tripura regional party, INPT says CAB will affect demographic situation of already over populated Tripura and NE region. It demanded exclusion of NE from CAB.
Both – Debbarma and Hrangkhwal – also highlighted contours of deliberations at the recently held meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. Amidst uproar all across the North Eastern Region, Amit Shah held a meeting over CAB to discuss with all parties and Chief Ministers of the North Eastern states on the issue before placing the Bill in ongoing Parliament session.
In the meeting, among others Chief Minister of Tripura Biplab Kumar Deb, Assam Minister and NEDA Chairman Himanta Biswa Sharma, representatives from other indigenous parties, Civil Societies and organizations were present.
Commenting on the meeting and INPT’s stand on CAB, Hrangkhwal said his party vehemently opposed the proposed CAB. The party, however, suggested the bill may be introduced exempting the north eastern States.
Justifying the opposition, Hrangkhwal said, Tripura is already over populated, introduction of CAB would result in fresh influx of people which would affect the demographic situation of the State and the region, as a whole.
Hrangkhwal suggested the Central Government to deeply ponder over consequences of proposed CAB before placing it in the Parliament and cautioned, otherwise law and order situation may worsen.
