Kolkata, March 1: Sanju Samson delivered a stunning performance as India defeated West Indies by five wickets. The victory ensure India a berth in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Eden Gardens.
Overcome with emotion, Samson sank to his knees. His unbeaten 97 off 50 balls became the highest score by an Indian in a successful T20 World Cup chase, surpassing Virat Kohli’s previous record.
Notably, India completed the highest successful T20I run chase at this historic venue.
West Indies set a stiff target of 196 in 20 overs. In response, India began cautiously. However, early setbacks put the team under pressure. Opener Abhishek Sharma fell during the powerplay. Soon after, Ishan Kishan also returned to the pavilion. As a result, India slipped to 53 for 2 after six overs.
At that stage, Sanju Samson stepped up. First, he assessed the conditions carefully. Then, he shifted gears. He punished loose deliveries and rotated strike smartly. Consequently, he kept the required rate under control.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav supported him with sensible batting. Together, they rebuilt the innings with controlled aggression. Soon, Samson raced to his half-century off just 27 balls. His timing looked flawless.
After Suryakumar departed for 18, Samson did not lose focus. Instead, he built another crucial stand with Tilak Varma, who smashed 27 off 15 balls. They attacked the spinners and used the dew to their advantage. Therefore, India stayed ahead in the chase.
However, West Indies fought back. Jason Holder dismissed Tilak. Later, Shamar Joseph removed Hardik Pandya. As a result, the match went down to the final overs.
With 17 needed from two overs, Samson remained calm. In addition, Shivam Dube struck vital boundaries.
Eventually, the equation came down to seven in the last over bowled by Romario Shepherd. Samson smashed a six to level the scores. Then, he lofted a boundary to finish the match in style.

Earlier, West Indies posted 195 for 4. Roston Chase scored 40. Holder remained unbeaten on 37. Rovman Powell added 34 not out. Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets.
Now, India march into the semi-finals with confidence. Moreover, they will face the England cricket team next. Above all, Samson’s innings showcased composure, courage, and class under pressure. (Edited)
