Agartala, July 24, 2019: Love of a doting grandfather helped to rescue a three-day baby girl after being sold by her mother in Tripura. A woman sold her three-day-old baby allegedly due to abject poverty – but the grandfather of the newborn baby could not accept it and inquired about his newly born granddaughter. He even lodged a complaint with the Police. The incidence took place at Naliabari under Champahaor PS at Khowai in Tripura.
Local sources said, one Madhavi Debbarma gave birth to a baby girl on July 19 – however, she and her husband Sushil Debbarma, allegedly sold the newborn baby to an issueless couple of Jampuijala. Once Madhavi returns home, the grandfather of the ill-fated baby girl – Jogesh Debbarma – confronted Madhavi and Sushil. In the face of sustained querries, they said that childless Bimal Debbarma and his wife of Jampuijala had adopted the newborn baby.
This reply could not satisfy Jogesh. Spending spree of Madhavi and Sushil raised suspicion of the grandfather. With no other option left, Jogesh Debbarma lodged a complaint (case no: 28/2019 u/s 370 IPC).
Based on the complaint, police swung into action and arrested Madhavi yesterday. She was sent to one-day Jail remand after Police produced her before the Court yesterday. Meanwhile, childless couple of Jampuijala came to Police station with the baby and authority handed over the newborn baby to her grandfather. Unconfirmed sources claimed that Madhavi had sold her baby for Rs 1800 only.
While local people are hailing the doting grandfather, mindless activity of parents of the baby drew sharp reactions.
