Agartala Aug 21: With the Haora River swelling dangerously, a heavy downpour in Agartala on Tuesday deteriorated the situation and threw the city out of gear.
City thoroughfares have turned into flowing rivers. Even as water flushing-out pumps in the city are running without interruptions, there is not much improvement in reducing the water on the roads.
Even several hours after morning downpour, main city areas like IGM Choumuhani, Banamalipur, Shakuntala Road and adjoining areas remained inundated. Houses and business establishments were submerged under waist deep water.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha waded through the inundated roads and took a stock of the situation.
Talking to the media, Dr Saha said the State including Agartala witnessed extremely heavy downpour in the last couple of days causing damages to houses, crops, livestock, and infrastructure. and loss of lives.
The Chief Minister referred to his discussion with Union Home Minister Amit Shah today and assured, the government and relief agencies are actively involved in rescue operations and providing aid to the affected people.
He appealed to people to stay cautious, avoid rumors, and cooperate with the administration.
On the loss of lives due to landslides and drowning, he said the State Government will do everything possible to provide assistance to the members of the deceased as well as affected families.
Meanwhile, the water level of the Haora River has risen alarmingly. The administration has already taken necessary steps. Officials from district administrations of various districts, NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), and SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) are working together to assist people affected by the floods.
Apart from Haora, water levels in Muhuri River in the South Tripura, Gomati River in Gomati district, Khowai river in Khowai District, Kakri and Juri Rivers in the North Tripura District are threatening and have already inundated vast areas forcing people to leave their houses and take shelter in relief camps.
