Durga Puja Gift of Life: GB Doctors Help 65-Year-Old Woman Walk Again

Agartala, Sep 2: On the eve of Durga Puja, when homes across Tripura are lit up in anticipation of the goddess’s arrival, a 65-year-old woman from Jatrapur in Sonamura was agonizing preparing herself for a Puja in silence—confined to bed, her body bogged down by a crippling neurological disorder.

But just as Maa Durga is believed to descend to vanquish darkness and despair, a new dawn broke for her. Thanks to the dedicated doctors of the Neurology Department of Agartala Government Medical College & GBP Hospital, she regained her strength to walk again.

This year, her Puja days will shine as brightly as anyone else’s.

The woman had been admitted on September 19, 2025, with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare disease that paralyzes movement.

Her family feared that she would never stand again. Yet, through compassion, expertise, and government-backed healthcare, the shadow of despair gave way to hope.

On September 23, 2025, under the watchful care of Assistant Professor Dr. Abir Lal Nath, Neurologist Dr. Arpan Mitra, and a dedicated team of healthcare workers and physiotherapists, the woman walked on her own.

A Lifeline Through Ayushman Bharat

Treatment for GBS is both complex and costly. She required Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) infusions worth nearly ₹3–4 lakh, far beyond her family’s reach.

But the doctors ensured that poverty would not dictate her fate. Through the Ayushman Bharat scheme, the entire treatment was provided free of cost at GBP Hospital.

This intervention not only saved a life but also highlighted how government initiatives are extending critical care to those who once had no access to it.

From Helplessness to Hope

At first, she could only twitch her toes. Slowly, she learned to stand, leaning on support. Then, in a moment that brought tears to many eyes, she took her first independent steps. On September 23, 2025, she walked on her own, her recovery nothing short of miraculous.

“It was a moment I will never forget,” said Dr. Nath, his voice heavy with emotion. “Watching her rise, stand, and walk brought tears to my eyes. The smile on her face is the greatest reward for all our efforts.”

The Team Behind the Recovery

Behind this transformation was a dedicated team of doctors—Dr. Abhijit Acharya, Dr. Arkaprava Ray Choudhury, Dr. Poulomi Nag, Dr. Shubrajit Das, Dr. Supratim Saha—and nursing officers Sebika Dutta, Rozy Chakraborty, Abul Hossain, Surajit Sutradhar, and Arnica Sinha.

Their care and sincerity, coupled with the patient’s willpower and timely government support, gave her not only treatment but a second chance at life.

A Festive Homecoming

On September 25, 2025, she was discharged—just days before Durga Puja. For her family, it felt like nothing less than divine grace: their loved one, once broken by illness, now standing tall again, ready to join the celebrations.

Her story is more than a medical recovery. It is a reflection of the spirit of Durga Puja itself—the triumph of light over darkness, courage over fear, and healing over suffering.

This Puja, as Tripura resonates with the beat of the dhak and the glow of lamps, one woman will also walk alongside her family, embodying the very essence of the season: renewal, strength, and victory over despair and disease.
