Belonia, Aug 12: The decomposed body of a woman missing for over two weeks was discovered on Tuesday in a dense forest near Kashari, under Jatrapur police station in the South Tripura District.
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Kana Debnath Das, had been untraceable since July 28. Her disappearance was reported by her daughter, Priti Debnath, at the Belonia Women’s Police Station, leading to a sustained 14-day search.
Police have arrested three people in connection with the killing — the woman’s husband, Raju Das; Dulon Das, a former Trinamool Congress candidate in the last municipal polls; and Mohammad Miya. Investigators allege that Raju Das paid Dulon Das ₹50,000 to arrange his wife’s murder.
According to police, Dulon Das, 28, of Ram Thakur Para, Belonia, and Mohammad Miya, 35, of Rajnagar Muslim Para, executed the plan. Kana Debnath Das was allegedly lured from her home through a phone call, taken to the Kashari forest, and killed by Miya, who is accused of slitting her throat with a cleaver.
Acting on phone surveillance and interrogations, police tracked down and detained the suspects on Monday night. The crime scene was subsequently identified, and the victim’s daughter was called to confirm the body’s identity.
Forensic experts have been called in to examine the body and the site. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing to establish the full sequence of events and any additional motives.
