Former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Wednesday rejected BJP leaders’ prediction that CPIM would be reduced to zero seats in the Assembly. He also criticized the state government over the recent Nagerjala transport workers’ clash, alleging administrative failure, attacks on opposition offices, and growing accountability concerns in Tripura.

Quick Glance

  • Manik Sarkar dismissed BJP’s claim that CPIM would lose all Assembly seats.
  • He alleged repeated attacks on CPIM offices across Tripura.
  • Sarkar linked electoral outcomes to the conduct of free and fair elections.
  • The veteran Left leader also criticized the administration over the June 3 Nagerjala transport workers’ clash.

Agartala: Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar launched a sharp political counterattack after BJP leaders claimed that CPIM would fail to retain any of its current Assembly seats.

Speaking to reporters in Agartala, Sarkar said electoral verdicts ultimately belong to the people. He acknowledged that any political party could lose seats if voters choose otherwise. However, he stressed that the Left movement would continue regardless of electoral setbacks.

According to Sarkar, the CPIM’s political relevance cannot be measured solely through Assembly numbers. He argued that the party remains actively engaged in political struggles across Tripura and beyond.

At present, CPIM holds 10 seats in the 60-member Tripura Legislative Assembly.

Allegations of Attacks on CPIM Offices

Sarkar also alleged that CPIM offices and workers have repeatedly faced attacks in Tripura since the BJP came to power.

He claimed that the office from where he addressed the media had been attacked several times. He further alleged that the CPIM state committee office also faced repeated assaults.

The veteran Left leader questioned the response of law enforcement agencies. According to him, some of these incidents occurred in broad daylight despite the proximity of senior government and police establishments.

Sarkar alleged that party workers themselves had to protect offices and control damage during such incidents.

While making the allegations, he maintained that the attacks had not weakened the party’s organizational activities.

Electoral Outcome Depends on Fair Voting Process

Addressing BJP’s prediction of reducing CPIM to zero seats, Sarkar said the outcome would depend on whether elections are conducted freely and fairly.

He alleged that voter intimidation and electoral irregularities could influence results. If voters are prevented from exercising their democratic rights, any political outcome becomes possible, he argued.

At the same time, Sarkar refrained from making specific forecasts about future elections.

Instead, he pointed to recent electoral developments across India and suggested that political trends indicate growing challenges for the BJP in several regions.

Sarkar Questions Administration Over Nagerjala Clash

Apart from electoral politics, Sarkar also commented on the violent clash that erupted on June 3 at the Nagerjala Motor Stand in Agartala.

The incident reportedly involved two rival groups of transport workers associated with the ruling BJP ecosystem. Several people sustained injuries during the confrontation.

According to Sarkar, the dispute was not political or ideological. Instead, he claimed the conflict arose over the management of funds collected from vehicle operators using the transport stand.

He explained that transport operators contribute fees that are traditionally used for maintaining the stand and supporting workers during emergencies or financial distress.

However, Sarkar claimed reports suggest that workers are no longer receiving such assistance.

Basic Civic Amenities Under Question

The former Chief Minister also highlighted what he described as deteriorating infrastructure at the transport hub.

Referring to media reports, he claimed that the Nagerjala stand lacks adequate drinking water facilities. He further alleged that a tube well at the stand had remained non-functional for weeks despite repeated complaints.

According to Sarkar, such unresolved issues have contributed to frustration among transport workers.

The clash eventually led to protests, with a section of transport workers reportedly suspending vehicle operations in parts of South Tripura.

Why in the Chief Minister’s Constituency, Asks Sarkar

Sarkar raised questions over the administration’s handling of the incident because Nagerjala falls within the Assembly constituency represented by Chief Minister Manik Saha.

He clarified that he was not suggesting that the Chief Minister should personally solve every local problem. Nevertheless, he argued that the state administration bears responsibility for addressing public grievances and maintaining law and order.

Sarkar alleged that governance suffers when accountability mechanisms weaken.

He urged authorities to take corrective steps and ensure timely intervention in local disputes before they escalate into violence.

Political Significance Ahead of Future Elections

Political observers believe Sarkar’s remarks are significant because they combine two major opposition narratives ahead of future electoral contests in Tripura.

First, the CPIM leadership is attempting to counter BJP’s confidence regarding future Assembly elections. Second, the Left is using local governance issues such as the Nagerjala clash to question the administration’s performance.

The BJP has not issued an official response to Sarkar’s latest remarks.
