In the Unakoti District of Tripura, CPI pushes for MGNREGA jobs ahead of Durga Puja
Kailasahar: Aug 25: In an attempt to champion workers’ rights and highlight local woes, a delegation from the Communist Party of India (CPI) Kailashahar Divisional Committee in Tripura submitted a memorandum to Unakoti District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Majumdar today, pressing for action on four demands, including employment opportunities for workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) ahead of Durga Puja.
The five-member delegation, led by CPI Tripura State Committee member Sayed Ali Badsha, included women’s leader Hasna Begum, divisional committee secretary S.M. Ali, and party leaders Sonai Miya and Abul Hosen. The group met with Dr. Majumdar to address pressing local issues.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Badsha outlined the delegation’s demands.
Topping the list of the demand was a call to roll out Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) projects across every Gram Panchayat in the Gournagar and Chandipur blocks. “Our workers deserve jobs now, especially with Durga Puja around the corner,” Badsha said, demanding a minimum of 15 days of work for every MGNREGA laborer during the festival period.

The delegation also highlighted the deteriorating condition of the embankments along the stream stretching from Lakshichhara Bridge to Kailashahar’s crematorium. Earlier efforts to reinforce the embankments with soil to prevent flooding have been undone by heavy rainfall, leaving roads in disrepair.
The CPI leaders urged the administration to undertake urgent repairs and install brick soling to ensure long-term accessibility. Traffic congestion and accidents on the Kailashahar-Dharmanagar road were another focal point highlighted by them.
The delegation proposed the establishment of permanent traffic posts with personnel at two key locations: in front of Unakoti District Hospital in Bhagaban Nagar and at Chirakuti Tri-Junction.Additionally, the CPI raised concerns about agricultural land in Safarikandi village, Ward No. 6 of Tilabazar Gram Panchayat, under Gournagar Block.
Accumulated garbage and overgrown vegetation have caused waterlogging on roughly 1,000 units of land, preventing farmers from cultivating crops. The delegation demanded immediate cleanup to restore the land for agricultural use.

Dr. Majumdar reportedly assured swift action. However, Badsha warned that failure to address these issues promptly would lead to escalated protests by the CPI in the coming days.
Party sources underscored, the delegation’s demands reflect growing concerns over rural employment, infrastructure, and agricultural challenges in Unakoti district, with the CPI signaling its intent to hold the administration accountable ahead of the festive season.
