Agartala, Aug 20: Tripura police arrested one person suspected of involvement in women trafficking racket on Tuesday night (Aug 19) raising concerns over organized trafficking activities in the region.
The reported trafficking of a house-wife, resident of Chandrapur in Gomati District of Tripura, surfaced after victim’s family filed a complaint with the Udaipur Women’s Police Station.
Based on the inputs received from women’s Police station in Udaipur, Police in Shantirbazar apprehended a man, identified as Amal Debnath, a resident of Shantirbazar subdivision, for his alleged involvement in women trafficking racket. Amal Debnath is alleged to have played a role in trafficking the Chandrapur based housewife from Udaipur to another state.
According to the victim’s family, the woman left home claiming she was visiting a bank in Chandrapur, Udaipur, but never returned. Her disappearance prompted frantic searches by her relatives.
Shortly after she went missing, her husband, Bidhan Debnath, received a phone call from unidentified individuals in Teliamura, who allegedly claimed to have detained his wife and demanded ransom for her release.
The matter was reported to the Udaipur Women’s Police Station, which launched an investigation. Preliminary findings indicated that the ransom call was made by Amal Debnath. Investigators suspect he trafficked the woman to another state in exchange for money.
Based on audio recordings of conversations between Amal and Bidhan Debnath, along with other corroborating evidence, Shantirbazar police were alerted. Acting on the inputs, a team arrested Amal on Tuesday night and brought him to Shantirbazar police station. He was later handed over to Udaipur police for interrogation.
Police sources revealed that Amal Debnath has faced several previous accusations related to women trafficking. In the present case, he is alleged to have enticed the victim with false assurances before sending her away. Reports suggest she left home with gold ornaments and ₹25,000 in cash.
The whereabouts of the missing housewife is yet to be confirmed by the Police. Authorities are now focusing on whether Amal’s interrogation will help trace the missing woman.
