Agartala, April 25: A wave of profound grief has swept through the streets of Agartala today. The city has lost one of its most iconic and beloved street entrepreneurs. Jayanta Roy (55), the creative visionary behind the famous ‘Pocha Achar’ brand, breathed his last on Saturday at the GB Pant Hospital. Roy succumbed to critical injuries after a horrific road mishap in the Sidhai Mohanpur area in West Tripura.
For the last two decades, Jayanta Roy was a fixture of the local culture, known for his unique marketing flair and his bicycle-laden buckets of tangy treats. His passing marks the end of the journey of an inspiring vendor.
The Passing of a Local Legend: From Bicycle to Brand
Jayanta Roy was far more than a simple vendor. He was a self-made marketing pioneer who understood the pulse of the people. His rhythmic, sing-song chant of “Pochha, pochha, pochha… pickles!” became the unofficial soundtrack of Agartala afternoons –especially during summer.
Starting from the lanes of Barjala, he built a household name through sheer authenticity. While big brands fought for shelf space, Roy won the hearts of the people with a smile and a bucket. Residents from Barjala to the bustling city center considered “Pocha Achar” a staple of their childhood and daily lives.
As news of his demise spread, social media platforms were flooded with tributes. Thousands of residents shared photos and memories, mourning the man who turned a simple snack into a shared cultural heritage for the state.
A Fatal Chain of Recklessness: Details of the Incident
The circumstances surrounding the accident have sparked outrage in Barjala and the surrounding areas. The tragedy highlights a “senseless plague” of reckless driving that continues to claim lives. According to a social media statement released by former MLA Dr. Dilip Das, the incident was part of a trail of destruction.
Reports indicate that the driver responsible for the crash had already hit two other individuals before colliding with Jayanta Roy. The impact was catastrophic. Roy, a resident of Madhyabhuban, Barjala, was rushed to GB Pant Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The medical report detailed the extent of the trauma:
· He had three broken ribs.
· Besides, a fractured waist.
· The accident caused two major leg fractures.
· Also, extensive internal bleeding in the chest cavity.
Despite the medical team’s tireless efforts, Roy could not be saved. Dr. Das has publicly demanded the strictest legal action against the accused driver. This call for accountability is echoing throughout the community, as citizens demand safer roads.
News Analysis: The Growing Crisis of Road Safety in Tripura
By the enewstime.in Editorial Desk
The death of Jayanta Roy is not an isolated incident but a symptom of a growing crisis on Tripura’s highways. Unregulated driving and road accidents. While the state has seen massive infrastructure development, the “human cost” of speed remains unaddressed.

Roy’s death serves as a stinging reminder that without stringent enforcement of traffic laws and speed governors, the state’s common citizens remain at constant risk. The loss of a micro-entrepreneur like Roy also highlights the vulnerability of those who earn their living on the move.
