Airports Authority of India (AAI) has renewed effort to restore the long-abandoned Kailashahar Airport in Tripura is gaining traction, bringing fresh hope to locals after 32 years of inactivity.

A senior team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) conducted an in-depth survey of the Kailashahar airport site in the Unakoti district on Monday (May 26, 2025), signaling a major step toward its potential reopening. Kailashahar Airport in Tripura is one of the oldest airports in the State. It was built in 1950.

The AAI teamโ€™s visit has ignited excitement among residents of North Tripura and nearby Cachar district in Assam, who have long advocated for the airportโ€™s revival.

The inspection team, headed by M. Rajkishore, AAIโ€™s Northeast Regional Director, included prominent officials like Kailash Chander Meena, Director (IAP) of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport in Agartala, alongside Unakoti districtโ€™s Additional District Magistrate L. Darlong and Kailashaharโ€™s Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pradip Sarkar.

The team evaluated the airportโ€™s current infrastructure, visibility conditions, and land requirements to assess the feasibility of resuming flights.

Rajkishore, addressing the media post-inspection, expressed optimism about the projectโ€™s future.
