Dr. Tutan Das, a young doctor from Shantirbazaar of South Tripura, was selected as the state’s only candidate for elite Doctor of Medicine (DM) course in cardiology in the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) this year in the recently concluded DM examination.
He would be leaving for AIIMS, Bhubaneswar soon, where he would be studying the course for next three years. The 28 year old Das is the first doctor in his entire extended family residing at Shantirbazaar of South Tripura, 80 Km from Agartala.
He completed his under-graduate MBBS course from Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Manipur in 2015 and did his MD programme in medicine from the same institute four years later with a gold medal. After serving as senior resident doctor at a Delhi-based institute since last one year, he took a break to prepare for DM studies.
Dr. Das said, “I am the first doctor in the family. It certainly feels good to be a part of the prestigious institute for such a course. But at the end of the day, it’s a course like any other”.
Asked if he would wish to return to Tripura after his course, Dr. Das said he wishes to return and serve in his state and added the state needs to develop its super specialty health services. He lauded the state government’s initiative to develop critical healthcare and said if proper infrastructure is available, many medicos from Tripura, who are now serving elsewhere in the country, would wish to come back and serve here.
His father Milan Das is a businessman and his mother Rekha Das is a housewife.
