The ruling BJP has stepped up its organisational preparations for the upcoming civic elections in Tripura. The party’s core committee met at the official  residence of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha in Agartala on Wednesday to discuss election preparations, future programmes and the prevailing political situation.

State BJP president Abhishek Debroy said the party had completed its preparations, including the candidate list. He clarified that the BJP would announce its nominees only after the election schedule was declared.

The meeting also focused on the opposition’s criticism of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Debroy accused opposition parties of misleading people about the exercise and said the process was a normal part of electoral administration.

BJP Core Committee Reviews Preparations

The core committee meeting brought together senior BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, former Chief Minister and West Tripura MP Biplab Kumar Deb, State BJP president Abhishek Debroy, State in-charge Mriganka Deo Barman, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath.

BJP MP and Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra also attended the meeting. Former State president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, former Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik and other senior leaders were present.

Debroy said the core committee meets regularly once a month. He indicated that the discussions covered the political situation in the country and the party’s organisational priorities.

The meeting comes as the ruling party prepares for the forthcoming civic elections. However, the BJP has yet to announce its candidates or the details of its election campaign.

Debroy Accuses Opposition of Trying to Create Instability

During his remarks, Debroy accused opposition parties of attempting to create instability across the country. He alleged that they were trying to weaken efforts to strengthen democracy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the BJP State president, opposition parties were seeking to regain power by creating disorder because they could not achieve their objective through elections.

He argued that the opposition parties’ approach was aimed at undermining the democratic process. These remarks formed part of his broader criticism of the opposition’s political activities.

Debroy’s comments also reflected the BJP’s position on the ongoing debate over the revision of electoral rolls. He accused opposition parties of presenting the SIR exercise in a misleading manner to influence public opinion.

BJP President Defends SIR Process

Debroy rejected the opposition’s allegations that the Special Intensive Revision was intended to help the BJP gain political advantage.

He said SIR had been conducted 12 times in the country and described it as a normal process. He referred to earlier exercises in 1995 and 2004, noting that the CPIM was in power in Tripura during those periods. He also referred to Congress conducting such exercises.

Debroy questioned why the opposition was now criticising a process that had taken place under previous governments.

He accused opposition parties of misrepresenting the purpose of SIR and misleading the public about its implications. He maintained that the exercise should not be portrayed as a measure designed to bring the BJP to power.

His remarks came amid the political dispute over the electoral roll revision. The BJP State president said the party would oppose what it considers a misleading campaign against the process.

Protest Planned Across Tripura on October 31

Debroy announced that people across Tripura would join a protest on October 31 against the opposition’s campaign over SIR.

He said the programme would give people an opportunity to express their disapproval of the opposition’s position. He described the proposed mobilisation as a response to what he called attempts to mislead the public about the electoral roll revision.

The BJP has indicated that it will continue to challenge the opposition’s allegations as the political debate over SIR develops.

Candidate List Finalised, Announcement Awaited

Debroy reiterated that the BJP had completed its preparations for the civic elections, including the finalisation of its candidate list.

However, the party will announce its nominees only after the election schedule is declared. He did not disclose the names of the candidates or provide further details about the proposed campaign.
