Agartala, January 09, 2019: Normal life remained largely unaffected on the second day and final day of nationwide shutdown called by 10 central trade unions in protest against the “pro-corporate, anti-workers and anti-people policies” of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre.
In Agartala, most of the markets, shops and popular food junctures remained open. Almost similar situation prevailed across the State. Also, Government offices and schools-colleges remained open, even though attendance in some cases were reported to be below the average. Vehicles ran as usual.
In the capital city, autos and rickshaws ran through out the day like any other working days. Number of commuters were also almost normal. Flights operated to and from Agartala, while the Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) operated their trains with very less passengers. The same situation prevailed in other parts of the State. However, transport services in remote areas were reported to be affected.
A police official said there were no untoward incidents reported from any part of the state in view of the strike. The Left parties and their trade union leaders maintained that the shutdown was total and successful while BJP claimed that the Bandh failed to evoke response.
