Agartala, August 29, 2019: Chakma community people today held a rally and demanded immediate implementation of Chakma Customary Law. In support of the demand, agitators submitted deputation to the ADC Chief Executive Member Radha Charan Debbarma.
Like other indigenous communities, Chakmas too have own customary practices. These practices include provisions for dealing with civil and criminal cases at the community level.
Speaking to media, demonstrators said, Chakma community has sets of customary laws to deal with issues as per their community customs. “However, we are being deprived of practicing our Customary Law. We are appealing to the authority to expedite procedures for implementation Chakma Customary Law”, leaders said.
Chakma leaders also alleged that no indigenous community is allowed to practice its own customary law.
