Agartala, September 01, 2019: Unidentified cyber fraudsters siphoned off Rs. 59,000 from an account of a Jhum cultivator of Kanchanpur in North Tripura District recently. In a delayed report, it was learnt one Jaharam Reang has an account with Kanchanpur SBI. Jaharam – a dweller of Purna Joypara which is 23 Km away from Kanchanpur – is a Jhum cultivator. “He is a poor Jhumiya, who earns his livelihood through Shifting (Jhum) cultivation. After hardworks, yields in Jhum cultivation are less than satisfaction putting Jhumiyas in abject poverty.
However, in his desperate bid to evade poverty, Jaharam managed to save Rs 59,000 with the bank over the years. It remains unclear as to how fraudsters siphoned off money from his account, Jaharam received three SMSs on his mobile on July 31 showing withdrawal of the money.
Not well aware about cyber crime, Jaharam did not pay much attention to the SMSs. On August 4, he went to SBI Kanchanpur branch to withdraw some money. To his utter shock, bank officials told him that he did not have sufficient balance. After updating his passbook, Jaharam realized that someone siphoned off money from his account. Quoting bank officials, sources said, fraudsters withdrew money from Siliguri.
Dumbstruck Jaharam blamed his ‘ill luck’ and filed a complaint with Police on August 9 last. Considering his hard labour and dedication – people of Kanchanpur are waiting to see response from the bank and Police. “Will he get back his money?” – this is being discussed in Kanchanpur area.
