An obscene video clip followed by a Salishi Sabha (Kangaroo Court) abetted suicides of a housewife and her husband leaving two children orphans at Chandra Para ADC under Sabroom in Tripura.

On May 4 last, a housewife, Anilmala Tripura committed suicide after her paramour Basanata Tripura of the same village betrayed her trust which subjected her to inhuman humiliation in a Kangaroo Court.

Within two weeks after her suicide, her husband, Ananda Tripura also committed suicide on Tuesday due to ‘social stigma’.  And, two children of the couple – a girl and a boy – have become orphans.

Anilmala developed an extra marital relation with one Basanta Tripura of Chandra Para and the relationship was continuing for four years. Recently, Basanta uploaded a video clip in social media showing Anilmala in compromising positions with Basanta.

As the video went viral, local leaders convened a Kangaroo Court on May 3 last. In that meeting, the video clip was replayed in front of her, Basanta and others including her husband. It was also alleged that leaders thrashed Anilmala and Basanta for the extra marital relation.

Felt ashamed and seriously humiliated, Anilmala committed suicide on the next day.

As the report of Anilmala published, the High Court of Tripura registered a suo moto case. After that Police arrested eight persons in connection with Anilmala’s suicide. The HC also ordered Police to ensure security for Ananda Tripura and accordingly Police were posted at his residence.

As Police investigation was going on, in the meantime, Ananda Tripura committed suicide today. Local sources claimed, Ananda committed suicide as he could not bear shame and social castigation.

“Lust, betrayal and above all, humiliation at the Kangaroo Court not only snatched away two young lives – but also rendered two children as orphans. As the High Court of Tripura took an suo moto case, we are hoping that the Court would ensure that the innocent children get justice as well as a place to grow up like normal children”, said a Sabroom based teacher.
