Two days after Eid-ul-Adha was celebrated peacefully across the State, tension ran high at a village at Dharmanagar area in North Tripura on Friday after a cattle head was spotted under a tree – Rupasi tree – that people of the Hindu community worship.
The incident took place at Ward 2 of Echai Baruakandi in Praytekroy Gram Panchayat today morning.
“People celebrated Eid without any trouble and afterward also there was no tension. However, we noticed a cattle head under the holy tree”, one of the villagers said.
Irked at this, people from neighbouring areas gathered at the spot, and tension started building up. Within a short time, more than 500 people gathered in the area. On information, large posse of Police led by Dharmanagar SDPO reached the spot. Police from Kadamtala also rushed to the spot.
Meanwhile, local people resorted to blocking the Kadamtala-Dharmanagar Main Road and raised demand to arrest the culprits immediately.
Amidst growing dissent, leaders of Hindu Sena and Viswa Hindu Parishad reached the spot. Even as tension was palpable, the situation remained under control as the agitators showed great restraint.
According to Police sources, it might be a conspiracy of some miscreants with a vested interest of inciting communal clash in the area. Later, Chairman of Kadamtala Panchayat Samiti, Subrata Deb also reached the spot and persuaded the agitators to withdraw the road blockade. He also assured that proper investigation would be carried out to this end.
