Over the Kumarghat rape issue, opposition parties of Tripura are trying to exert political pressure and corner ruling BJP ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls. Congress party leaders followed by CPM State Secretary Jitendra Choudhury are targeting BJP in general and Labour Minister of Tripura Bhagaban Das in particular alleging involvement Minister’s son in the rape case.

Earlier, Congress activists held demonstrations in Kumarghat on the issue demanding arrests of all the culprits – including the son of an ‘influential’ person of the ruling party.

On Wednesday, CPM State Secretary Jitendra Choudhuri raised the issue of ‘rising’ crimes in the State and blamed the ruling BJP for its failure in tackling the situation.

“In addition to the deterioration of law and order situation in the state of Tripura under the rule of BJP government, what is more worrying is that crime against women is increasing in the state especially under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha”, alleged Choudhury.

Referring the incident of gang rape incident at Kumarghat under Unokoti district on October 19, the CPI-M leader castigated the state labour minister for his son’s alleged involvement in the incident. He said, “The minor girl was gang-raped by a group of youths led by the minister’s son in an apartment owned by the minister himself.”

“I have come to know from a very reliable source that presently the minister’s son is residing in the government quarters of his father here in Agartala,” he alleged.

He appealed to the police to immediately conduct a search operation in the government quarters of the minister and arrest his son for his alleged involvement in the gang rape incident. Two persons were already arrested a day after the incident following the registration of an FIR.

“At a time when the people were concerned of the incident of Kailasahar, another such incident took place on Tuesday at Kalyanpur in Teliamura sub-division, where a minor was gang raped by a group of youths belonging to the ruling party,” he further alleged.

He continued slamming the ruling BJP party and alleged, “People of this state are being frustrated with the misrule of this BJP government, where the incidents like murder and crime against women are gradually growing in the state.”
