Power Minister of Tripura Ratan Lal Nath presented a series of proposals to the Union Minister for Urban Development and Power Manohar Lal Khattar aimed at enhancing urban development in Tripura.
Key among the proposals was a request for an additional Rs 26.34 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme to augment the water supply in Agartala. Nath emphasized the urgent need for these funds to ensure a reliable and consistent water supply to meet the growing demands of the urban population.
Besides, Tripura Power Minister urged for the swift completion of the “Lighthouse” project, which focuses on providing affordable housing solutions for low-income families in urban areas. To address the higher construction costs in Tripura, he also requested an increase in the central share of funding under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This adjustment, he argued, is crucial for continuing progress in providing affordable housing without financial strain.
Tripura is seeking increased allocation of funds under the Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (UIDF) for the four projects already sanctioned in the state. These projects are pivotal for developing urban infrastructure, including roads, drainage, and other essential services.
Ratan Lal Nath highlighted the successful implementation of all centrally sponsored urban development projects in Tripura. The state has made significant strides, including signing an agreement worth Rs 530 crore with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to address infrastructure needs for drinking water, roads, and drainage in 12 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
Tripura was recognized as the best-performing state in the Northeast under PMAY in 2019 and the second-best in the 150-Day Challenge category in 2021. The state has also excelled in waste management under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), receiving awards for cleanliness in the small state category.
Under the AMRUT Mission, a total of 27 water supply projects have been constructed in nine cities. The rejuvenation and beautification of nine water bodies in six cities have also been completed.
The Tripura Urban Livelihood Mission (TULM) has formed 5,556 self-help groups, promoting economic self-sufficiency. Street vendors have been identified and provided with certificates, identity cards, and loans under the Pradhan Mantri Samriddhi Yojana (PMSY).
Tripura consists of 20 towns, including one municipal corporation, 13 municipalities, and six nagar panchayats. Under PMAY, a total of 86,001 houses have been sanctioned with an expenditure of Rs 1,233.35 crore, out of which 66,608 houses have been constructed. Furthermore, nine community public toilets have been constructed to enhance sanitation facilities.
Minister Nath expressed his gratitude to the central government for its unwavering support and cooperation in Tripura’s urban development efforts. He remains optimistic about continued collaboration to further the state’s growth and development goals.
