The ruling BJP in Tripura has achieved a sweeping unopposed victory in a significant number of seats in the state’s three-tier panchayat elections.
Out of the total 6,909 panchayat seats, BJP candidates have already secured 4,806 seats without any contest, leaving only 2,103 seats up for election scheduled to be held on August 8.
Out of 6,370 seats in 606 gram panchayats, BJP candidates have won unopposed in 4,551 seats. Consequently, elections will be held in remaining 1,819 gram panchayat seats.
In the 35 panchayat samitis, out of a total of 423 seats, BJP candidates have been declared winners unopposed in 235 seats, with elections scheduled for the remaining 188 seats.
Out of 116 seats across eight zilla parishads, BJP candidates have secured 20 seats unopposed, leaving 96 seats for electoral contests.
According to the latest data from the State Election Commission, the ruling party’s dominance is particularly notable in seven blocks, where they have won all seats unopposed in the gram panchayat elections. These blocks are Durga Chaumuhani, Puratan Agartala, Jirania, Boxanagar, Jolai Bari, Nalchar, and Tepania.
Similarly, in the panchayat samiti elections, BJP candidates have achieved unopposed victories in all seats across thirteen blocks, including Durga Chaumuhani, Kalyanpur, Mohanpur, Bamutiya, Puratan Agartala, Dukli, Jirania, Nalchar, Charilam, Boxanagar, and Tepania.
Addressing the media at the state BJP office in Agartala on Thursday, State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharya highlighted the party’s organizational strength and the opposition’s inability to field candidates in numerous seats. He emphasized that the public’s confidence in the BJP, driven by the party’s developmental initiatives, has been instrumental in this unprecedented unopposed victory.
“People trust the BJP for its development-oriented governance, as evidenced by their support in both the Lok Sabha and panchayat elections. Our organizational capabilities have ensured that we have candidates in almost all seats, unlike the opposition,” Bhattacharya commented.
He expressed optimism that the electorate’s faith in the BJP would translate into continued support in the upcoming 3-tier Panchayat elections.
The press conference was also attended by the party’s Vice president Tapas Bhattacharya, General Secretary Amit Rakshit, and other senior leaders, who echoed the president’s sentiments and highlighted the party’s achievements.
