CPIM Slams AMC for Bulldozing Homes in Agartala, Demands Justice for Displaced Families

The main opposition in Tripura, CPIM raised voice against bulldozing houses in the city and demanded justice for the affected people.

A team of CPIM leaders, led by MLA and State Secretary of the Opposition Party Jitendra Choudhury, visited South Ramnagar’s Border Golchakkar area in Agartala to meet families who were displaced after the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) demolished their homes. Reportedly, many of these families are currently living without shelter under open skies.

The visiting team while interacting with the affected families strongly condemned the bulldozing and sought justice.

CPIM-Tripura-DemolitionSpeaking during the visit, Choudhury highlighted the decades-long presence of the affected residents in the area.

He remarked, “Homes and shops of families who have lived here for over 40 years were demolished with just 15–20 days' notice by the AMC. No alternative arrangements were made for their relocation.”

Choudhury criticized the AMC’s actions, noting that previous governments recognized these residents as lawful citizens of Tripura, providing them with essential services such as water, electricity, and LPG gas connections.

“These families actively participated in elections and paid taxes regularly. For a project like road expansion or city beautification, it is unacceptable to render them homeless without making alternative arrangements,” he asserted.

Condemning the BJP-led AMC’s demolition drive as “inhuman,” Choudhury described it as a direct violation of a Supreme Court order and demanded accountability from AMC officials involved in the incident.

The CPIM leader also underscored the primary demands of the displaced families: government-provided rehabilitation and access to employment. “These people are willing to cooperate with the government’s decisions, but they seek shelter and livelihoods to sustain their families. No administration should act so heartlessly,” he said.

The CPIM leaders rallied in favour of the affected people and slammed the concerned authority. While condemning the action of the AMC, the CPIM leaders also alleged the demolition drive went against the Supreme Court verdict.
