Under the guidance of the Panisagar Agricultural Science Centre in North Tripura, a successful trial cultivation of the flood-resistant Ranjit Sub-One paddy variety has been carried out in Ward No. 4 of Bargoul village, located in Kadamtala block. Local farmer Bipul Nath took part in the trial, cultivating the variety on half a kanni of his two-and-a-half kanni plot of land. The paddy seeds were sourced from Assam Agricultural University.
The Ranjit Sub-One variety is specifically designed for flood-prone areas, capable of withstanding water submersion for up to 15 days without compromising its yield. This trait has made it a promising solution for farmers in flood-affected regions of the state.
The results of the experimental cultivation have been promising. Bipul Nath, who typically harvests between 4 to 4.5 quintals of paddy per season from his land, reported a significant increase in yield this time.
By planting the Ranjit Sub-One variety, he harvested 8 to 8.5 quintals of paddy, doubling his production. Nath expressed his satisfaction with the results, and other local farmers have shown interest in adopting the variety for their own fields. In addition to paddy cultivation,
Nath also grows vegetables during the winter and operates an agarwood and dairy business, supporting his family of three.
The initiative has been supported by key experts, including Shantanu Das, Subject Matter Specialist (Crop Science), and Dr. Kanakabati Kalai, Subject Matter Specialist (Agricultural Extension) at the Panisagar Agricultural Science Centre. Das explained that the trial was conducted in two locations, resulting in an estimated yield of approximately 5.2 tons per hectare.
The Agricultural Science Centre plans to purchase a portion of the harvested paddy from Bipul Nath to use as seed for the next planting season. Furthermore, they are offering assistance to other farmers who are interested in adopting this flood-resistant paddy variety, signaling a promising future for agricultural practices in flood-prone regions of Tripura.
