From Vote Banks to Empowerment: Tripura CM spotlights cultural enrichment, development of Indigenous people

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha conveyed that the era of tribal communities being mere vote banks is behind us, as the current government is dedicated to the holistic development of the State’s Indigenous communities.

Dr Saha emphasized the transformed approach of the incumbent State government towards the welfare and community development of the Indigenous people in a day-long workshop with the Indigenous community leaders at Pragna Bhaban in Agartala on Friday.

The workshop, organized by the tribal welfare department, highlighted the state's commitment to cultural enrichment and progress for tribal communities.

Acknowledging the role of tribal community heads, the Chief Minister emphasized their responsibility to effectively convey the government's vision to the concerned populace.

Underlining the state's sincere efforts toward cultural enhancement for Indigenous communities, the Chief Minister also highlighted the respectful treatment accorded to their community leaders.

In a nod to history, the contributions of Tripura's kings were duly recognized, exemplified by the renaming of Agartala Airport in honor of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, an architect of modern Tripura.

The workshop shed light on the growing national and international recognition of "Risa", the Indigenous handicraft of Tripura, a development that fills the state with pride. Dr Saha praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continuous efforts in tribal welfare since assuming office in 2014. These endeavors led to the election of Droupadi Murmu, a tribal representative, as the President of the country.

The Chief Minister applauded PM Modi's Act East Policy, which has contributed to remarkable progress in Tripura and other Northeastern states. Notably, Tripura has gained six national highways, with eight more currently under construction. The communication network has also flourished, evidenced by the operation of 12 express trains and the approval of four ropeways.

The Chief Minister emphasized the state government's commitment to inclusivity and non-discrimination. He assured that no political bias would interfere with the development of Indigenous communities and the preservation of their rich cultural heritage.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance tribal arts, particularly bamboo and cane crafts, with support from the central government.

Dr Saha also said the development of the Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) area also took center stage. The Union Finance Minister sanctioned Rs. 13,000 crore for comprehensive development in the TTAADCarea, a gesture acknowledged by Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha.

Speaking on the occasion, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma highlighted the government's initiatives in line with Prime Minister's "Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas" (Together with All, Development for All) policy. The government's multifaceted approach encompasses communication, education, and healthcare sectors, aiming for balanced progress.

Chakma urged Indigenous community leaders to actively contribute to the state's advancement. Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia highlighted the sincerity of both central and state governments in tribal welfare. He encouraged Indigenous Community heads to shoulder the responsibility of ensuring that the benefits of various schemes reach their communities.

The workshop saw the participation of other key figures, including Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma and Department Secretary L.T. Darlong, who shared their insights on the occasion.

The Chief Minister started the program by felicitating all Indigenous Community heads with flower bouquets and shawls, symbolizing unity in the journey towards a developed state.
