Ulto Rath mishap in Kumarghat: Saddened PM announces ex gratia, Tripura CM declares compensation for victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in the mishap during the Ulto Rath Yatra at Kumarghat under Unakoti District in Tripura on Wednesday (Jun 28).

In an unprecedented incident seven persons including three children charred to death after a Return chariot (Ulto Rath) came in contact with a high tension electric transmission lines in Kumarghat today. Around 16 persons were seriously injured. Sources said, death toll may rise.
 
PM Modi announced an ex-gratia from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the victims.

In a thread of PMO tweets, the Prime Minister said; “The mishap during the Ulta Rath Yatra at Kumarghat is saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in this mishap. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected: PM @narendramodi”.

“Rs. 2 lakh ex-gratia from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 would be given to those injured in the mishap in Tripura: PM @narendramodi”

Ulto-rath-tragedy-kumarghat-tripuraSoon after the incident, Chief Minister of Tripura Dr Manik Saha left for Kumarghat to take stock of the situation. He inspected the mishap spot and met the victims and their families in Kumarghat.

Later, Dr Saha held a press meet to announce ex gratia for the victims and ordered a District Magistrate led probe.

Expressing heartfelt condolences, Tripura Chief Minister announced immediate compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, while individuals with burn injuries exceeding 60 percent will receive Rs 2.50 lakh. Additionally, those with burn injuries ranging from 40 to 60 percent will be given Rs 74,000. 


Shocked at the incident, he said that such an unfortunate incident had never occurred in the history of Tripura. The incident has left everyone utterly shocked.

"We cannot express in words the magnitude of this unfortunate incident. During the Ulto Rath Yatra, the chariot came in contact with a wire, leading to its electrocution. Those who were on the stairway of the chariot died on the spot, while those inside the chariot remained unharmed. This incident is truly unfortunate and unimaginable. As soon as I heard about the incident, I personally spoke with Minister Tinku Roy and former Minister Bhagaban Das, who were in Kumarghar, and informed them that I would be coming. I have visited the site and tried to understand the situation. Such an incident has never happened in the history of Tripura. We express our deepest condolences," said CM Dr. Saha.

He further said the injured persons have been admitted to Fatikroy, Kumarghat, and GB Pant hospitals.

“I have visited Fatikroy and Kumarghat hospitals to meet the victims and the family members of the deceased. I have instructed the Health Department Authority and Chief Secretary to ensure proper treatment. We stand with the families of the deceased and the injured persons. The government has decided to bear all the expenses for the treatment of the injured", Dr Saha said.

He also added, "We have also decided to provide immediate relief measures from the government, offering Rs. 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. Individuals with burn injuries exceeding 60 percent will receive Rs. 2.50 lakh, while those with burn injuries ranging from 40 to 60 percent will be given Rs. 74,000."
